Ipads and flaming witches!

The last day of April there are two annual events in Gothenburg.

The (all over Sweden) celebration of Valborg with big fires lit on the evening and

“Chalmers cortegen” a student parade. Great fun for a street photographer!!

Living in Barrio Simon Bolívar!

One of the poorest parts of Santo Domingo named after the liberation hero Simon Bolívar.

The president’s wife is leading a project in the area. The most visible change has been paintings of sunflowers on the walls of some houses!

The title of one of the songs we heard last night at the Nefertiti concert in Gothenburg  (In Cuba meaning “hey buddy, what´s going on”) LILY D OVIEDO Y SU SONORA CLASICA   Really first class Cuban Salsa!

Afterwards music by DJ “La Gallina” Ann Marie. Her selection always makes your legs move towards the dance floor!

480 years ago!

On 16 November 1532, The Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro met the Inca emperor Atahualpa at this spot in Cajamarca, northern Peru.

It was a confusing battle where the Spaniards where extremely outnumbered. In the end the invaders anyway managed to capture Atahualpa and later on execute him.

It´s a thrilling piece of history. You can read about it for example in The Discovery and Conquest of Peru by William H. Prescott

It was the beginning of Latin America. These three mestizo boys resting in this Andean valley, ones the battlefield of Cajamarca, are descendants and a result of that violent and cruel meeting between the old and the new world!     Click on photo to see higher resolution
